One of my clients Voxer'd me yesterday in full panic mode.
"Shauna Lynn, I'm losing my mind. I have 47 things on my to-do list and my brain is telling me that 46 of them are URGENT. I can't even pick where to start, so I'm just... frozen. I spent two hours reorganizing my kitchen cupboards instead of doing anything important."
I laughed (gently) because I've been there. We've ALL been there (and honestly, an organized kitchen doesn't sound like a bad thing, even if it wasn't one of the 47 items on the list).
What makes it even harder is that she's juggling all of this while being a mom! She knows she can't say yes to everything, but she really doesn't want to let anyone down. Sound familiar?
Here's the thing about "urgent": When everything feels urgent, your brain goes into survival mode. It starts treating your email inbox like a toddler having a meltdown in Target.
Not helpful when you're trying to build a business AND be present for your family.
So I shared my go-to filters with her - the same ones I use when I'm feeling overwhelmed:
"Does this make me money?" and "Does this bring me joy?"
Now, these might not be the perfect filters for everyone, but in a pinch? They're a pretty solid litmus test.
Look at your overwhelming to-do list and run a few items through these questions. You might be surprised how many things don't pass either test.
She Voxer'd me back three hours later: "I went from 47 things to 8 things that actually matter and I already managed to get a couple of them done. I feel like I can breathe again. And I actually had time to read bedtime stories without my brain spinning about everything I 'should' be doing." Hmmm...most of the "urgent" stuff wasn't urgent at all. It was just loud.
Your business doesn't need you to respond to every notification, attend every networking event, or perfect every single process before you can grow.
It needs you to focus on what actually moves the needle - so you can show up fully for both your business AND your life.
Try those two questions with just 10 items on your list today. I bet you'll surprise yourself with how much mental space you create.
