I did something recently that surprised even me

…I hosted a yard sale.

Yes - me.
The person who avoids yard sales like most people avoid tax audits.

But I still had some leftover pieces from my staging business (plus some accumulated household "extras" that I no longer needed), and I knew they had value. So I set everything up, put on a warm coat (it's fall in Canada after all), and committed to making it worthwhile.

It actually wasn't terrible. Most people were friendly and polite.

But...as expected, several people low-balled me.
Like, aggressively.

And every time someone tried to negotiate my prices down, I held firm. Sure, I offered small concessions where it made sense, but the ones asking me to cut my price in half? Nope. I wasn't having it.


So sometimes they walked away. And sometimes they paid full price.

Every time someone walked, the little voice in my head whispered:
“What are you doing? You want to get rid of the items, maybe you should have just taken their offer? Did I make a mistake?”

Even though I knew that the items were worth far more than they were offering me.

Sound familiar? (In pricing… client conversations… proposals…)

Here’s the thing though:

  • Later, those exact same items sold - for full price.
  • Nearly everyone else told me my pricing was very reasonable (and didn't bother trying to haggle for a better deal).
  • I was grateful I trusted myself instead of caving to pressure.

Because here’s the truth:

Taking a low-ball offer isn’t always the win it feels like in the moment.

Sometimes it costs you the real opportunity that was coming right behind it.

Scarcity thinking says:
“Take whatever you can get - what if nothing else comes?”

Strategic CEO thinking says:
“If someone walks away from fair value, they weren’t the right fit.”

When you hold your price, you hold your power.
